The Gaslamp

The early Chinese immigrants contributed not only their labor but also their sustainable working knowledge to this growing union of a new nation. The same story is still playing out in California today, where different cultures meet, where social barriers exist, and where newcomers thrive.

The Gaslamp

An exploration of resilience, family values, and cultural heritage.
The movie is told through the eyes of 98-year-old Tom Hom, a trailblazing hero still to this day. Throughout his long political career, Tom worked alongside presidents Reagan and Nixon, Martin Luther King Jr. and many other high-profile politicians and businessmen as he sought to improve the lives of all people in California—from transforming Stingaree Row into a vibrant Gaslamp Quarter District, to his family’s letting go of three downtown blocks for the current Petco Park.
Through this film, Tom invites viewers to revisit the timeless wisdom, enduring tradition and ongoing success that have shaped his life and our societies. The film will reveal their persevering and hardworking experiences, uncover life-long American-Chinese friendships. Amidst racial segregation, they established a harmonious community while contributing to societal well-being and providing inspirational guidance for our modern society.
