Sculpture & Art in Lisbon

At the urban area of the capital, sculptural works are dispersed predominantly in the main development axes, conglomerating from south to north and in a coastal margin starting at Belém area - west, culminating in the Park of Nations, the east side, conceived and installed at the former EXPO'98, where national production coexists with international creations of considerable prestige. In Lisbon, there are other sculptural epicenters, such as the romantic Guerra Junqueiro Garden, also known as Jardim da Estrela, the Eduardo VII Park and Calouste de Gulbenkian Foundation Garden, also notable for both Portuguese and foreigners creations.

Rooster Magic

The “Galo de Barcelos” (Rooster of Barcelos) is one of the most recognized symbols of Portugal. This colourful and bold rooster can be found in many Portuguese homes, restaurants, bakeries and so forth. The rooster is said to symbolize many things such as honour, fairness and virtue, among others. Naturally, the legend varies from city to city, and changes as it is passed down through generations. The legend that was taught to me as a child began with a large celebrati

Culture
Jerónimos Monastery

Jerónimos Monastery was designed as a venue to serve the House of Aviz and the nobility, who gathered for church activities, wedding ceremonies, and royal funerals. It later became a prayer chamber for those departing on their expeditions to the Orient. The monastery was made the final resting place for kings and queens throughout Portuguese history. Luís Camões, Portugal’s greatest poet, and Vasco da Gama, a Portuguese explorer and the first European to reach India by sea, were also laid to rest in the monastery. As the greatest of the Portuguese architectural heritages, Jerónimos Monastery witnessed many ups and downs, triumphs and failures, beginnings and ends, throughout the centuries.

Pastéis de Nata

Pastéis de nata are delicious egg custard tarts dusted with cinnamon, which are said to have been created in a Belém pastry shop in 1837 by monks who, expelled during a revolution in 1820, began baking to earn money. The pastries became very popular with visitors to the Belém tower, and eventually a small store attached to a sugar refinery began churning them out for the masses. Today dozens, if not hundreds, of pastelarias across Lisbon sell them. Located in the old part of the city, this charming restaurant in Alfama has a small number of tables inside and out on the street. Serving a combination of Portuguese, Mediterranean and Brazilian dishes, we loved their upmarket food, reasonable prices, and friendly, family restaurant-style service. Their ‘gambas picantes’ starter is one of the tastiest dishes we ever had – a bowl of fresh prawns in a lightly spiced, tomato, garlic and whiskey sauce, perfect for dipping in pieces of warm, crusty bread. So good we were tempted to have it again for our main. Located in the old part of the city, this charming restaurant in Alfama has a small number of tables inside and out on the street. Vhils is known for carving faces on façades, while Bordalo II creates art from trash. Following the revolution of April 25, 1974 there was an explosion of political murals, and today artistic graffiti is even sponsored by the city council, which founded the Street Art Gallery by the iconic Glória funicular.
